During an first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” the metropolis, ushering in “a different age” and an audacious commencement to his administration.

A Historic Leader

The young democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this seldom arrives and even more uncommon is it that the public whose grasp the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.

The inauguration was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over powerful interests.

A Sweeping Platform

Mamdani now faces one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform including:

• Universal childcare
• Free buses
• A rent freeze for nearly 1 million households
• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these services may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the city's top earners and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating Political Dynamics

The new mayor will deal with skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a appointments director resigned over offensive past social media posts.

Mamdani has attempted to ease these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly friendly.

The Basic Challenges of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing basic services: sanitation, curbing the rodent problem, repairing roadways, and making sure reliable subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
