People have assembled around the country to remember the second anniversary since the Hamas-led assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions continued in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the hostilities in Gaza.

The assault resulted in in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured away to Gaza as captives. It was the most most lethal day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.

Israel answered by beginning a armed campaign in Gaza which has taken over 67,000 people, based on figures from the area's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its figures are considered trustworthy by the United Nations and other world agencies.

"Our bloodthirsty enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on that day.

He also pledged to "realize all the aims of the war: the return of all the kidnapped, the elimination of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will no longer present a danger to Israel".

Commemorative Events Across Israel

The Israeli government postponed formal remembrance events until October 16th - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still took place around the country on Tuesday.

A remembrance service for the families of people who lost their lives in the Hamas assault was held in Tel Aviv. Organized by the families themselves, it was aired across Israeli television channels.

A period earlier, a moment of silence was observed across the country.

Negotiation Meetings in Egypt

At the same time, the conflicting parties' representatives convened in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of the Egyptian city for a second day of indirect talks to review the provisions of the proposal.

A senior representative involved in the talks revealed that an evening round of indirect talks began at evening in Egypt.

The official said the day's discussions ended without significant progress, because of disagreements over the proposed Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas seeks to make certain Israel does not recommence combat after the initial stage of the agreement.

He commented that the discussions are "difficult and have not yet produce any major advancement," but noted that facilitators are making efforts to reduce the differences between the two sides.

Critical Points in Negotiations

  • A lasting halt to fighting
  • The swap of the hostages still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The removal of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Arrangements for relief supplies distribution
  • Post-war governance of the area

Citizen Sentiment

In Tel Aviv's public square that day, young Hagar - whose brother survived the attack on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were lost their lives and numerous more were captured by Hamas fighters - explained: "Nowhere feels like home any longer and until all the hostages come back none of us will feel safe."

"Once we see everybody home returned, we can breathe once more. Then we can begin to heal," she concluded.

In front of the prime minister's residence in Jerusalem, people assembled to demonstrate their backing for the relatives of the hostages. Israel says nearly fifty stay in confinement in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are thought to be living.

Demonstrator one woman stated: "We need do whatever arrangement needed for the hostages to return. But we truly desire assurances that we will be protected."

Research now regularly indicate that around the majority of Israelis prefer the conflict to end in as payment for the freedom of the hostages.

Gaza Circumstances

At the site of the gathering, mourners gathered to pay their respects.

From the site, the sound of military attacks and artillery could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where observers indicated the intense Israeli attacks carried on.

In Gaza City, attacks were reported in the morning of that day in the west side district, Rimal and locality areas and in the east side area of that sector, as well the settlement to the northwestern area.

"As the evening falls, the fear comes with it," evacuated Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack last year, explained.

"Me and my three children are fearful of the attacks. All the night we are lying together, holding each other, especially my youngest child who puts his face on me the entire evening."

"Continuously we look at the reports to see what happened. And I'm afraid that this halt will not be completed and that the fighting will resume to us."

Health Emergency

The healthcare center in Gaza City said it had taken in the corpses of six people by the daytime, including several killed in an Israeli attack in the southern district.

A different healthcare center in the south region of that area reported additional dead people had been brought there. One of them was lost his life by Israeli troops while looking for aid to the south, medical staff said.
