The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Famed for Styling Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer behind many legendary styles associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.
Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, such as the light-hued ensembles that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."
Price's death comes shortly after he debuted his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "dress" made famous by Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he started his work in clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with outfits on supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in designing form-fitting garments made him a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he commenced designing outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including several ensembles for her American tour after becoming Duchess.
After a career spanning more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in partnership with the label 16Arlington.
