Plans for Putin-Trump Talks Postponed Shortly After Budapest Negotiations Announced

There are "no arrangements" for US President Donald Trump to confer with Russian President Vladimir Putin "in the immediate future", a administration representative has announced.

This past week the US president said he and the Kremlin leader would conduct negotiations in Budapest within two weeks to address the ongoing hostilities.

A planning session between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his opposite number Foreign Minister Lavrov was scheduled to occur recently - but the administration stated the two had had a "constructive" conversation and that a meeting was not "necessary".

The administration withheld further information on the reason the negotiations had been postponed.

Previous Developments

Trump had raised the possibility of a Budapest summit over the phone with the Russian leader, a just prior to hosting Ukrainian President President Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Various sources indicated his talks with the Ukrainian leader had been a "shouting match", with insiders indicating Trump had urged him to cede significant territories of eastern Ukraine as part of a settlement with Moscow.

Nevertheless, on this week Trump supported a peace initiative supported by Ukraine and European leaders to freeze the hostilities on the existing battle lines.

"Freeze the lines in its current state," he stated.

Russia has frequently resisted against halting the current line of contact.

The Russian government was exclusively seeking "permanent resolution", Russia's foreign minister commented on Tuesday, implying that freezing the front line would only amount to a temporary ceasefire.

Political Perspectives

The "root causes" of the conflict required resolution, Lavrov said, using Moscow's terminology for a range of maximalist demands that involve the acknowledgment of total Russian authority over the eastern region as well as the military reduction of the country – a unacceptable proposition for Kyiv and its Western allies.

The Ukrainian president stated conversations concerning the current lines were the "beginning of diplomacy" but that Russia was "employing all tactics" to avoid diplomacy.

He further commented the exclusive issue that could cause Russia to "take notice" was that of the supply of long-range weapons to Ukraine.

Weapons Discussions

The Russian president's unscheduled call with the US leader recently occurred before reports that the United States was planning to provide distance-capable weapons to Ukraine that could possibly hit inside Russia.

Zelensky said it was the missile discussion that had pressured the Kremlin to participate in talks. The conversation concerning the weapons systems had turned out to be a "significant input" in international relations", he remarked.
