Outrage Explodes as Former President Trump's Post on Director Rob Reiner Spurs Sharp Rebuke
Personalities from both sides of the political aisle and the Hollywood industry are coming together to censure Donald Trump for his comments in the wake of the shocking deaths of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
An Inflammatory Online Statement
Following the discovery of the couple dead at their Los Angeles residence, Trump took to his platform to label the deceased director as "anguished and suffering". The post, he claimed Reiner's demise was "due to the hostility he caused others through his massive, relentless, and incurable condition with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
The post then pivoted to self-praise, juxtaposing Reiner's alleged "intense obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump called the "Golden Age of America".
Law Enforcement Update and Arrest
Authorities have since announced the detention of the Reiners' 32-year-old son, Nick, on suspicion of murder in connection with the incident. Reports indicate his bail was set at a substantial sum.
A Torrent of Criticism from Celebrities and Politicians
The reaction to Trump's post was immediate and harsh.
“What a disgusting and despicable comment,” said public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a friend, also condemned the statements. She pointed to prior comments from Trump regarding political violence, asking, "Have you no decency? Is it possible to get any lower?"
The state of California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, simply wrote, "He is a sick man."
Mirroring this sentiment, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "He is a despicable piece of trash."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "He's just lost it. Now saying the Reiners caused their own demise because they didn’t support him. So sick."
Criticism from Within Party
Some GOP lawmakers also expressed disapproval.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the event was "a personal tragedy, not about political feuds or political enemies". Greene also mentioned challenges with substance abuse and mental health within families.
Fellow GOP representative, Thomas Massie, called Trump's discourse "inappropriate and disrespectful" given the nature of the deaths. He openly challenged members in his political party to defend the comments.
The Director's History and Views on Trump
Rob Reiner was consistently a vocal critic of Donald Trump. In a past conversation, he argued Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the presidency. He had also warned about the risks of authoritarian rule should Trump return to power.
"We see autocracy making its move around the world," Reiner said. "If we crumble, there’s a danger that democratic systems collapse around the world."
Regardless of his strong opposition, Reiner had in the past shown "absolute horror" and condemned violence for political ends unequivocally after the killing of another individual.
An Ironic Connection: The Art of the Deal
Providing a element of historical connection, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the photographer who captured the cover image for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had previously recounted the story of the photo shoot, noting Trump's request for "special hairspray" while being photographed on a skyscraper overlooking Central Park.
