Grief as Beloved South African DJ Shot Dead in the Heart of Johannesburg.
A renowned South African media personality and entertainer has been murdered in the country's largest city Johannesburg, sending shockwaves across a country struggling with entrenched crime.
Warrick Stock, who went by the name DJ Warras, was gunned down in the downtown area on a Tuesday afternoon.
Police said the 40-year-old entertainer was accosted by a trio of assailants, with one opened fire on him before fleeing on foot.
The motive of the shooting has not been established and no arrests have been made, police said.
How It Happened
Police revealed that Stock was attacked as he was exiting a location near the Carlton Centre.
He had spent several hours at the building supervising the installation of safety equipment, which had been controversially occupied by unknown people, it was reported.
"Authorities believe the man was approached by three unidentified men after he parked his car, and they opened fire at him before escaping on foot," an official report stated.
Security camera video reportedly depicted a individual with dreadlocked hair and clad in what appeared to be a security uniform firing shots on Stock before fleeing.
The DJ attempted to flee after he was wounded but collapsed on the opposite side of the road.
It was further revealed that Stock had an unused firearm and nothing was taken during the incident.
Important clues, like spent shells, were discovered at the location.
Call for Public Assistance
Authorities have requested anyone who saw the event who may have witnessed the attack to assist with the investigation.
"We know they walked a long distance after the attack, and officers have been attempting to locate them to determine their whereabouts," remarked an authority figure.
Outpouring of Grief
His family member, a close relative, said the relatives are devastated to understand the tragedy.
"I am devastated. I am shattered," she said.
"Everyone understood he was a champion for numerous individuals. He was a fearless commentator about issues not many people were willing to speak about. This is a tremendous loss."
She urged the citizens to refrain from sharing explicit content from the incident, explaining this was an extremely painful time, above all for Stock's children.
Life Beyond the Decks
Stock was the presenter of Ngicel' iVisa, a reality show that aired on a South African broadcasting platform.
Apart from his media career, Stock was engaged in various commercial activities, including private security, supplying elite guarding services and managing safety for high-profile events across South Africa.
He was also reportedly involved in real estate operations and was involved in building evictions.
National Shock
His killing has caused national trauma and prompted an outpouring of tributes from his audience, the authorities and political parties.
A senior figure remarked he was furious and grief-stricken by Stock's murder.
"He was forthright fearlessly and impartially. He even challenged me and my decisions as a minister. He was a true embodiment of who we ought to be," was his tribute.
A political leader commented the "shocking killing of DJ Warras in broad daylight is a trauma for all South Africans".
A industry leader noted that "Stock was more than just a face of a reality series. He was a skilled narrator, a passionate music lover and a generous spirit who brought excitement and dynamism to every moment on screen. His commitment to his craft left an indefinable mark."
In a communication, the network he worked for said Stock was known for his magnetism, warmth and intelligent commentary, adding that his memory "will endure".
A National Challenge
South Africa, the region's leading economy, has one of the world's highest homicide statistics, driven by property crime and gang violence, with some 63 people losing their lives per day in a recent six-month period, according to government figures.
